To travel love percentage can be fun, but in a different country to live, especially one so very different from the culture in which I grew up, living just as long a novelty. After 18 months of excitement in Seoul novelty started losing its luster. After 18 months, the culture shock largely on your flushed and hopefully not in the stream swept it. It was then that the desire for anything South African pack a man after 18 months ferocious bite. Whether this desire to your mother's love percentage cooking, Mrs Balls's chutney on your hot dog, an audience member, a nice braaivleisie with porridge and chakalaka or my favorite, Peppermint Crisp tart, every expatriate experience one time or another severe withdrawal symptoms. It's also easy to adjust to lose your South African roots and ongeanker feel in your South African identity.
There lives a fantastic group of South Africans here. There are about 1.5 million foreigners in Korea. Approximately 20,000 of this group, as I, English teachers from the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa came here. The number of South Africans in that group turned in about 2500. It's a relatively small group, love percentage but we do not let our guard down. Every year in the summer, usually in June or July, draws about 500 South Africans for the annual South African Braai in Seoul. We celebrate our heritage, our language and our culture with our fellow expatriate friends and of course the natives!
