CWI MALAYSIA IS PART OF COMMITTEE FOR A WORKERS INTERNATIONAL (CWI). THIS BLOG WILL OUR ANALYSIS REPORT AND ACTIVITIES IN MALAYSIA AS WELL AS IN THE OTHER PARTS OF THE WORLD.
Speech Kshama Sawant, Local Councillors Alternative Socialist Party (CWI USA), in Seattle, USA on success drafting minimum wage of 15 dollars an hour working demographic on the 2nd. June 2014
Half a century ago, Dr. Martin Luther King (human rights) held a parade for a reasonable wage in Washington, where 250,000 people have participated, mostly black workers to claim their rights. They have demanded two dollars per hour of work. Comparing the value of the dollar today, it is the equivalent figure - Dr. King and his movement has launched the first fight to claim salary of 15 dollars per hour of work, at the same time they also fought against racial violence embodied in Jim Crow laws.
Our victory is less than 6 months after the launch of the '15 'Now, after the first election of a socialist as a member of the local council in Seattle after more than 100 years. We built this motion-based labor movement in Seatac (a small town near Seattle) and fast food workers' movement that began in New York a year earlier. We are united demographic with the organization of workers in Seattle, who campaigned demographic continuously for '15 campaign now.
We have urged large companies to raise the salaries of more than 100,000 low-wage workers, which is to allocate 3 billion dollars of corporate profits to employees who are on low pay scale in the next ten years.
Win a 15 dollar an hour minimum wage job can give inspiration to many people across America. We need to recognize what's happening in Seattle that has brought us to this point.
'15 Now 'was not won on the negotiating table or to' compromise 'between the employee and the business. It is also not due to a generous yield of large companies or representatives of the Democratic Party in the state. What has been voted in the Local Council reflects the victory of the workers who fought and fell into the road last year.
In the '15 demographic campaign demographic 'Now, workers and activists met every week, hold conferences and debates, organizing large-scale assembly, and involves thousands of people around the city stressed the need to fight for minimum wage. We have won the public debate - in a recent survey, 74% of people now support the campaign '15 Seattle Now '. We beat the arguments capitalists in corporate media with the concrete analysis.
Let this be our guide. At every stage of the struggle, corporations and their representatives, have sought to undermine our efforts. And our success in the future will also depend on the organization of workers and ordinary people who fought for the interests of all of us.
This also shows why we need an alternative to the two parties representing capitalists. While Democrats masquerading as a progressive alternative to the Republican Party - we can see in Seattle how to just through the election of a socialist then the authorities had approved demographic the policy that is fair to employees. We need more independent socialist candidates demographic who are willing to go against demographic the tide of corporate politics.
We will return to these questions as a fine tip (tips penalty), the long phase-in (long-Phase in), payroll training (training wage) that was driven by capitalists demographic in the implementation of the minimum wage.
What has been tried allotted through kelongaraan demanded by the corporate is a reminder to us that the victory will be determined demographic by the balance of power. It is a reminder that we must continue to build a strong movement and sound. Movement strong enough to overcome the counter-attack of the capitalist. Movement arising from '15 Now 'should continue to win more benefits for addressing income inequality faced by workers - including to fight for rent control, increase taxes on millionaires and big developers, and full government funding for all public services.
I call on all workers to join the movement. demographic Attempts to undermine the
